The following criteria determine eligibility:

Hold a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) and be accepted into an accredited CRNP program.

Attend school full-time (minimum 12 credit hrs/sem)

Agree to work at UPMC Western Maryland for one year for each year of scholarship received (upon graduation).

The Sophia E. Powell Nursing Scholarship supports those pursuing an advanced degree as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP). Bob Powell established the fund in 2022 to honor his aunt Sophie, who suffered a bad fall and two-week hospitalization in the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehab Unit at UPMC Western Maryland. Both were impressed by the level of professional and compassionate care from the clinical staff. As a pharmacist, Mr. Powell met with senior administrators and the Foundation to determine an immediate need here at UPMC and created the Nurse Practitioner scholarship to honor those who helped his aunt.

Sophie was born and raised in Cumberland and graduated from Allegany High School in 1942. She enjoyed a lifelong career in local banking and was known for her quick wit and wise counsel, qualities that her six nieces and nephews continue to value.
