Patient care is one powerful way that our nurses make an impact every day at UPMC Western Maryland. Amanda Mannick is a nurse who is committed to the very best for our patients, and she is advancing her degree to better serve our community. Here in the WMHS Foundation, we are so grateful to be able to offer meaningful resources to help nurses like Amanda continue their education, thanks to generous donors like you.
A recipient of the Sophia E. Powell Nursing (CRNP) Scholarship, Amanda has spent the past 15 years caring for patients across a wide range of specialties – medical-surgical care, oncology, cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation, home health, infection prevention, COVID response, children’s specialty care, and now radiation oncology. Wherever the need has been greatest, Amanda has answered the call with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.
Today, while continuing to work at UPMC Western Maryland, Amanda is pursuing her Family Nurse Practitioner degree (MSN) at Chamberlain University, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. At the same time, she serves as a caregiver for her elderly father – balancing the demands of work, family, and advanced clinical education with remarkable determination.
The Sophia E. Powell Nursing (CRNP) Scholarship plays a vital role in supporting nurses like Amanda. By helping cover tuition, fees, and educational resources, the program eases the financial burden that often accompanies advanced nursing education. This assistance has allowed Amanda to remain focused on her studies, her patients, and her family. For Amanda, the scholarship represents more than financial support – it is an investment in the future of healthcare in Western Maryland. Upon earning her degree, she plans to continue serving our rural community as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, expanding access to compassionate, high-quality care while building lasting relationships with patients and families.
Thanks to the generosity of our donor family and supporters like you, the Sophia E. Powell Nursing (CRNP) Scholarship continues to strengthen the local healthcare workforce by empowering exceptional nurses to advance their education and remain rooted in the communities they serve. Together, we are creating a legacy of excellence, compassion, and service – qualities Amanda demonstrates every day.
